What you need to know about having dental implants fitted

When it comes to having gaps in your teeth filled, there are very few solutions that are better than oral implants.

Attached to the gums via surgery, the implants fuse with the surrounding jawbone over a period of around 3 to 6 months. As the implants themselves are made from titanium, they are biologically inert, meaning you shouldn’t need to worry about any allergic reactions

When it comes to having dental implants Cambridge fitted, come to me, Domingos Mamede. I know all there is to know about the fitting of oral implants, and I can advise you on how many you need to have fitted, as well as the aftercare required for your specific case.

But before you contact me about having dental implants Cambridge fitted, what are some of the things you should know?

There are different implant types

There are different types of dental implants Cambridge. Following an assessment, I will be able to choose the most suitable option for you.

Endosteal implants are the most commonly used type of oral implants, which are surgically placed directly into the jawbone.

Subperiosteal implants are placed on top of your jawbone, just under the gum tissue, and are used when there is insufficient jawbone height for endosteal implants. Then, there are zygomatic implants, which are suitable for placing into the upper jaw only. They are 3 times longer than the endosteal option and are affixed to the cheekbone.

There are also mini implants, which are about half the size of endosteal implants. These are suited for people who have issues with their jawbone density, and they are also best suited for those who only want to have a single tooth replaced.

The fitting is pain-free

Yes, it may seem like a bold statement, but the fitting of oral implants is not as scary as it sounds.

I will make sure that your mouth is numbed beforehand, or if you are nervous, you will be offered sedation. Once the implants are fitted, you will need to take pain relief at home, which should consist of paracetamol; do not take ibuprofen or aspirin, as this can cause the blood to thin and worsen bruising.

Your lifestyle has an impact

Like most things, lifestyle will impact how quickly your implants heal and how long they last. If you smoke or drink excessively, this will slow the healing process and is likely to impact the health of the jaw and the implants. So, try to cut these habits out, eat healthily and drink plenty of water.

They are money-saving

It may seem odd, but yes, having oral implants fitted is money-saving for many people.

You don’t have to worry so much about paying for denture glue, replacement dentures, or even paying for fillings, root canals or crowns, as the chances of decay forming on any of your natural teeth post-implants are reduced. Why? Because there are no gaps for the bacteria and plaque to hide in.

They are customised

It sounds obvious but when you have oral implants fitted, the prosthetic teeth that are attached to them are shaped, shade and size matched to your surrounding teeth. So, unless you point them out, no one will be able to see that you’ve had them fitted.
